More about the artist:
This body of ceramic work originated in my life-long exploration into the imperfections of life from which beauty and renewal arise. This work is inspired by the Lowcountry landscape. Each vessel is an experiment of creative impulse where the serendipitous beauty emerges from the random association of simple elements whose inherent disparity and similarity are fused into unique creations. The spontaneous arrangement of foraged nature fragments and human made object seeks to emulate the unpredictable way nature shapes the coastal landscape and its beaches and our often random and uneven human response.
One aspect of my work is to confront the comforting (traditional functional clay pottery functional forms) to the unsettling, unfinished, uneven shapes with drift wood and other nature debris roughly inserted into them. The vessels are left rough and unpolished, marks from the hand-built process remain visible and none are ever perfect or finished. Each piece of drift driftwood informs the design of the clay vessel.
