Dr. Harold Lewis was born in New York City in 1918. He studied at the Arts Students League and New York University. He earned his doctorate of Philosophy in the School of Education at New York University. After serving as a welder in the U.S. Navy during World War II, Hal became a weekly lecturer on Abstractionism in Art at the New School for Social Research in New York City. He was then a Professor of Art History at Millersville University in Pennsylvania until his death in August 1971 at the age of 53. A memorial exhibition of his work was held at the Phoenix Gallery in New York the following December.
